It’s not rare to see yet another marketplace letting people trade their second hand items online. As the peer to peer space gets saturated, fewer marketplaces provide value propositions that are significantly different. So when we came across these five marketplaces, we couldn’t keep ourselves from sharing them!
1. Ezra’s: Ever walked into an spirit store and been overwhelmed by the amount of choice and your poor knowledge of the variety of spirit labels? It has happened to the best of us. Ezra’s sources different types of craft spirits from lesser known brands around the world and sells them through its online platform. The idea is to help consumers discover and access lesser known spirit brands from around the world. Ezra also produces original content about each of those spirits to help consumers learn about the spirit so that they can make a more informed choice.
2. Nimber: Getting packages delivered can be a pain given high shipping charges. Often, it’s just easier to wait for friends or family to be travelling that route so that they can take it for you. Nimber does exactly that. It connects people who need packages delivered to those who are travelling the same route and are willing to carry people’s packages for them at a cost that is calculated according to the weight of the item.
3. 3D Hubs: With 3D printing becoming a huge fad, do you ever wonder when you can have one yourself and print cool personalised toys? With 3D Hubs, you can get connected to people who own 3D printers in your geographical area and send them the design you want printed. Once your product is printed, you can collect it from the printer. 3D Hubs already has 18,000 printing locations on its map.
4. Artsicle: Artsicle lets local artists list themselves and their art work on its web based platform. Potential buyers can browse the artwork and the artists’ profiles, and contact the artists in and around their neighborhood. The idea behind Artiscle is to evolve local art communities and make artists’ works directly available to buyers.
5. Sparkplug: Being a musician is not cheap. The high costs of musical instruments, rehearsal rooms, amps, etc. can really give you a run for your money. Sparkplug lets musicians share costs with each other by letting them rent each other’s music gear. Users can find the gear they need by browsing Sparkplug’s website which lists out the gear that musicians in the neighborhood or willing to lend. Once they find the right instrument, they can request it from its owner and pick it up from their place.
We believe that these lesser known marketplaces are solving niche problems in a truly creative way. While they don’t cater to large crowds, they solve big problems for a small audience very well. We look forward to seeing them grow and build robust marketplaces.
Meanwhile, we’d love to hear your opinion on these marketplaces! Would you use them? Are there any favourites of yours that we left out of this list? Leave a comment to let us know!
